The Brumby Labor Government's 2009-2010 Heritage Grants program will
provide $2 million worth of funding for caretakers of local heritage
places, to conserve and protect Victoria's heritage, the Member for
Cranbourne, Jude Perera MP announced today.
Mr Perera said this was the fourth year of Victoria's Heritage Grants
program, an initiative funded out of the $20.5 million strategy: Victoria's
Heritage: Strengthening our communities.
He said the Brumby Labor Government is taking action to support local
communities and those who took responsibility for Victoria's precious
heritage.
"The heritage grants support the local custodians who care for our rich
heritage and work very hard to share it with the wider community," he said
Mr Perera encouraged local heritage custodians to apply for grants for
Repair and conservation of heritage places and objects;
Interpretation of heritage places and objects;
Community collections management; and
Local government heritage studies and advice.
To date 84 community groups have been supported to help conserve local
landmarks and objects, from local halls and mechanics institutes to
rotundas and aircraft.
"Brumby Labor Government grants have supported 37 interpretation projects
and 71 local museums, historical societies and other caretakers have been
assisted to document and manage their collections. More than 40 local
heritage studies have been funded," he said.
The grants provide for places in the Victorian Heritage Register or that
can be included in a Heritage Overlay. Privately owned places or places
operating on a commercial profit, places owned by State Government
departments, schools (public or private); TAFEs or Universities are not
eligible.
