Train commuters using Cranbourne Station now have more than 400 new
parking spaces to choose from, thanks to a new station car park added as
part of the Cranbourne Stabling and Rail Project, Minister for Public
Transport Lynne Kosky announced today.
"The Brumby Government is taking action to give Victorians the best
transport network in Australia so they can spend less time commuting and
more time with their families," Ms Kosky said.
The boost to car park spaces comes as demand for train services increase.
"Passenger numbers on Melbourne's train network are currently the highest
they have ever been and with this increased patronage comes increased
demand for parking at stations," Ms Kosky said.
"This new northern car park is in addition to the upgrades to Cranbourne
station and the new train storage facility that government provided as
part of the Cranbourne stabling and station upgrade project.
"With the project delivered on time and on budget, this is a positive
example of the Government delivering transport solutions for Melbourne's
commuters. This new car park adds more than doubles the existing capacity
of Cranbourne Station.
The opening of the new car park is the final element of the $37 million
Cranbourne Stabling and Station Upgrade. The project involved the upgrade
of the existing Cranbourne station as well as a new storage facility for
six trains.
The new storage facility at Cranbourne has delivered capacity and
reliability improvements for the whole Dandenong rail corridor.
A spokesperson for,Jude Perera MP, State Member for Cranbourne said that
the new carpark is great news for local commuters who combine a car and
train journey to get to and from the city.
"The completion of these 400 additional spaces has added to the 90 already
delivered - Cranbourne currently has about 292 parking spaces, but we are
more than doubling capacity with over 400 new spaces, meaning more than
700 spaces are now available for commuters," said a spokesperson for Mr
Perera.
"The Dandenong rail corridor services 15 per cent of Melbourne's
population and that's why we made it a priority transport investment as
part of our commitment to meeting the transport needs of all Victorians.
"In addition to improved reliability of services, commuters will also
benefit from security upgrades and increased accessibility, including the
paving of informal paths to allow easier pedestrian access to the station"
the spokesperson said.
