Social housing construction supports vital jobs in Dunkley
Up to 31 new social housing dwellings will be built in the electorate of
Dunkley under the Australian Government's Nation Building Economic
Stimulus Plan at a cost of $8,547,258.00.
"Governments have moved quickly to provide a stimulus to the local economy
- fast-tracking projects so that building work on new social housing
dwellings can begin immediately," Jude Perera MP, Member for Cranbourne
said.
"This is great news for local jobs and the local economy" said Mr Perera.
"In these tough times it is critical that we do all we can to help
businesses retain their workers as well as employ more people."
"The Rudd Government is taking practical steps to support local jobs in
the building and construction industry through its Nation Building
Economic Stimulus Plan to cushion the impact of the global financial
crisis." said Mr Perera.
"Unfortunately, our local Liberal Federal Member of Parliament actually
voted against this package, and the previous Howard Liberal Government
basically sat on their hands and did nothing, as Housing wasn't sexyenough
in receiving vital support from the Liberals."
These new social housing dwellings will be ready for tenants to move into
by June 2010.
"This means new homes for struggling families, age pensioners and people
with a disability."
"It will also support critical jobs for builders and tradies, including
apprenticeships. This has a positive flow on effect to suppliers, small
businesses and local economies"
"It also means we are providing more housing for people who need it the
most - helping to meet the Australian Government's commitment to halve
homelessness by 2020."
More homes will also be built under Stage 2 of the social housing stimulus
plan to be announced later this year.
"This is just the start of the Commonwealth and State's investment in
social housing which ultimately will see strong amount built over the next
two to three years across Victoria.
